“˜Raising resilient kids”™ at James McQueen PS

Nearly 50 parents attended an informative and interactive workshop about “raising resilient kids” by James McQueen Public School principal Larry Lacey on Jan. 22.

The event was organized by the school council. Lacey, an educator and principal for 35 years, led parents through a two-hour workshop and discussion that included strategies on how to raise resilient kids.

Based on his experience both as an educator and hockey coach, Lacey provided real life case studies that demonstrated how different parenting approaches produce different outcomes.

Parents discussed scenarios and parenting approaches that could help a child withstand the challenges of life now and into the future.

Parents also learned about how important it is to let kids make mistakes and gain independence.

Advice given included, “When a child does make a poor decision, it is important to not ask them ‘why’, but how to learn from that mistake and move forward.”
